Anniversary: Methodist to continue pivotal role to Nigeria-prelate

Lagos, Sept. 20, 2022 (NAN) The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Chukwuemeka-Uche said that the Church would continue to play pivotal role to ensure a better Nigeria society.
The Gospel preacher, made the projection on Tuesday in Lagos at a Press conference to flag off activities for the Church’s 180 years anniversary and it’s 60 years autonomy from the Church of England.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos reports that, the anniversary tagged “Year of Jubilee” begins with a revival crusade on Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos to an ordinance service on Saturday at the Ajaun Tree Centre at Badagry, where the Church began in 1842 to a thanksgiving services on Sunday at its Tinubu Lagos worship centre.
Uche, thanked God for the growth of the Church and its numerous achievements over the years said that, the Church that pre-dated Nigeria was instrumental to the independent of the country from the imperialist state.
According to him the Church with a cardinal objective of egalitarianism, brought Christianity, western education, good healthcare system and various social services to the Nigerian society to transform people to better status.
“Many of the nation’s nationalists that fought for the independent of Nigeria from the British colonists were educated by the Methodist missionary that values human freedom.
“The great Obafemi Awolowo and the great Zik of Africa and many other foremost leaders were products the Church’s missionary schools without which it will be difficult for this country and others to attend independence at the time they got it.
“180 years of meritorious service to humanity and 60 years of the Methodist Nigeria that having our autonomy from the Church in England is worthy of celebration, it’s a year of jubilation for us and for the entire Nigerian society.
“As a Church we have been known for championing pragmatic role of human transformation such as the abolition of slave trade that was started by a Methodist missionary the Church will not relent in ensuring that good governance is insinuated in Nigeria as it celebrates its anniversary,” he said.
The head of the first Church in Nigeria, frowned at the underdevelopment of the country with varying social problems the people daily contend with; said that with the choice right leaders come 2023 it would take six months to fix the country back to greatness.
The leader, traced how the Church began in Badagry with returnee missionaries from sieralone and Liberia spread to other parts of the country with not less than two million worshippers in Nigeria has continued to institute transformational programmes in the society.
He employed Nigerians to vote competent persons in leadership positions and pray for God’s direction to take the nation out of the wools(NAN)
