LAGOS: ‘Fake’ Commissioner of Police, Lawyer, 11 others in Police Net

The Lagos State Police Command on Monday paraded 13 suspects for crimes ranging from armed robbery to unlawful possession of controlled substances, including an impersonator who has been parading himself as a commissioner, among others.


Parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the command, urged residents to always avail valuable information to the police to aid them in arresting criminals.

He said, “On September 2, 2023, about 1640hrs, one Nwagu Emmanuel ‘m’ visited a police premises and introduced himself as a Commissioner of Police. He was fully regarded as such, but upon questioning, he was discovered to be an impersonator. A search was conducted at his abode, and a Deputy Commissioner of Police warrant card, an Assistant Commissioner of Police warrant card, a Kenwood walkie-talkie, a police camouflage singlet, and a face cap were recovered”.

Hundeyin added that the fake lawyer was arrested on September 4 after a complaint from the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in the Epe area.

“The suspect, one Ibrahim Bello ‘m’ has been conducting and presenting himself as a lawyer at the Epe High/Magistrate Court for several years. Operatives of the Command arrested the suspect fully dressed as a lawyer in court. He was brought in for questioning, where he was discovered to be an impersonator,” he said.

Hundeyin said other suspects included a woman, Ganiyat Oni, aged 40, who was arrested on September 10, 2023, about 1300hrs, in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, for allegedly being in possession of a large quantity of substance suspected to be hard drugs, including but not limited to 97 wraps of colos, 22 wraps of loud, some mixture of loud and Arizona, and a sum of Two Hundred and Seventy-one Thousand, Six Hundred Naira (N271,600), her proceeds as at the time of arrest.

He added that on September 4, 2023, at about 0630hrs, based on credible intelligence that a group of boys were sighted in an uncompleted building around the Seme area of Lagos State, police operatives of the Command stormed the scene. “Upon sighting the police, all the suspects fled. The operatives recovered a Smith and Wesson pistol with eleven rounds of live ammunition. Efforts is ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects”.

“On September 9, 2023 at about 0000hrs, operatives of the Command arrested one Bamishe Omotayo ‘m’ aged 38, after receiving a distress call on the stealing of a Volvo car from where it was parked at Eredo axis of Epe, Lagos State. The police officers went in pursuit of the criminals. The vehicle was recovered along the Ibadan express way when the arrested suspect and his cohorts (who fled upon sighting the police) stopped to fuel the vehicle,” he added.

The police spokesperson further explained that others were arrested for alleged rape, armed robbery, cultism, and defilement. And that the suspects would be prosecuted before a competent court of law.

Hundeyin said that within the period of two weeks, the command recovered four firearms, two live cartridges, one expended cartridge, eleven live ammunition, and one vehicle from the culprits.

Other items recovered were two wristwatches, six phones, some quantities of weed suspected to be a variant of drugs, a walkie-talkie, police warrant cards, and a police camouflage cap and singlet.
