Ejigbo, Lagos – March 25, 2025 – The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Egbetokun Kayode, in collaboration with the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), organized a special Ramadan lecture for the youth of Ejigbo. The event took place at Ejigbo LCDA, opposite NNPC, and was led by renowned Islamic scholars, including Imam Al-Ghafoor, an education consultant, and Sheikh Muizudeen Salmon Alawiye, popularly known as Baba Ejigbo.
Representing the IGP at the event were the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Operations, Tijani. The initiative aimed to use religious teachings to promote peace, moral values, and crime prevention among the youth, aligning with POCACOV’s non-kinetic approach to policing.
Mansuru Ogbe, the Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of alternative methods in crime reduction. He expressed gratitude to the IGP and POCACOV for bringing this program to Ejigbo for the first time. He urged the youth to embrace the teachings and make conscious efforts to rebuild their lives, reiterating the local government’s commitment to continued partnership with the police in fostering a crime-free society.
ACP Olabisi Okuwobi, the national coordinator of POCACOV, highlighted that the initiative aligns with the IGP’s belief that law enforcement alone cannot combat crime. Instead, preventive policing, especially during Ramadan, encourages self-reflection and behavioral change. The theme of the program, Name, Fame, Shame, and the Consequences of the Hereafter, emphasized the long-term impact of one’s actions in this world and the next.
The event saw an overwhelming turnout, with attendees provided with transportation, meals, and religious materials to support their learning. ACP Okuwobi expressed appreciation for the IGP’s logistical support, ensuring that fasting participants could comfortably attend. She also commended the police for taking a holistic approach to youth engagement beyond arrests and detentions.
The program also targeted former cult members and individuals at risk of criminal behavior, encouraging them to renounce negative influences and embrace a new path. Religious leaders, law enforcement officers, and community members collaborated to provide mentorship, skill acquisition opportunities, and scholarships for those willing to change their ways.
In conclusion, speakers at the event called for a collective effort from parents, society, and the government to support youth development. Abdul Gaffar Oyewole, from the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, urged young people to be patient and persistent in their pursuits, reminding them that success is a gradual process. The Ramadan lecture marked a significant milestone in community-based crime prevention and social reformation efforts in Ejigbo.
