On the Escalating Conflict Between the United States, Israel, and the Islamic Republic of Iran
Post by Supreme International Magazine

June 22, 2025I In this critical hour for international peace and security, I wish to address the world as a global citizen, a Nigerian, and a firm believer in diplomacy, justice, and the sanctity of human life.
The world is watching with great anxiety as tensions in the Middle East enter a dangerous new phase. The United States’ recent airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan mark a major escalation in a conflict that has been decades in the making. This is not an isolated act of war—it is the culmination of years of distrust, broken agreements, regional rivalries, and the persistent failure of the international system to enforce fairness and dialogue.
📌 How We Got Here: A Legacy of Broken Trust
The roots of the present crisis can be traced back to 2015, when the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal—was signed between Iran and world powers, including the United States, under the Obama administration. This agreement was one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of the 21st century. It placed strict limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment and nuclear development in exchange for lifting crippling economic sanctions.
However, in 2018, under President Donald Trump, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the agreement, reimposed sanctions, and adopted a “maximum pressure” policy against Iran. This move shattered trust and gave Iran the incentive—and justification—to scale back its nuclear commitments. Since then, Iran has gradually increased its enrichment levels, reaching 60% uranium purity, which, while below the 90% weapons-grade level, is dangerously close and has alarmed the international community.
⚠️ Israel’s Undeclared Arsenal and Shadow Role
While Iran remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Israel has never signed the NPT and is widely believed to possess a nuclear arsenal of around 90 warheads. Despite being unacknowledged officially, this capability has long been an “open secret” in global security circles. Israel operates under a policy of nuclear ambiguity, maintaining a strategic advantage while avoiding formal international scrutiny.

Over the years, Israel has conducted covert operations inside Iran, including sabotage of nuclear facilities, assassinations of scientists, and cyberattacks. Though often unclaimed, these actions have repeatedly heightened tensions and drawn Iran closer to militarization. The most recent alleged Israeli strike on Iranian infrastructure was followed almost immediately by the American airstrikes—suggesting an emerging pattern of coordinated action that Tehran cannot ignore.
🔥 The Present Danger: A Region on the Brink
Iran has now vowed to retaliate—not only against the U.S. but also against Israeli interests and U.S. allies in the region. Its response is likely to involve:
Direct missile or drone attacks on Israeli cities or military facilities;
Proxy operations via Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and armed groups in Iraq and Syria;
Targeted assaults on U.S. military bases in Iraq, the Persian Gulf, and beyond;
And perhaps most critically, the possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which over 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
The implications of such actions would be catastrophic—not only for the Middle East but for the entire global economy, including Nigeria, which is directly affected by oil prices, global trade, and geopolitical stability.
🌍 What Must Be Done: Diplomacy Is the Only Exit
This is not a time for the world to retreat into silence. It is a time for bold diplomacy, strategic restraint, and principled leadership.
The United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and emerging global voices must immediately call for:
- An urgent ceasefire and de-escalation on all sides;
- A return to the JCPOA or a renewed agreement, with stronger mechanisms for mutual trust and enforcement;
- An open discussion on global nuclear equity—not just non-proliferation for the few, but disarmament for all;
- Protection of civilian lives and critical infrastructure, especially energy corridors that support the livelihoods of billions.
🇳🇬 Nigeria’s Place in Global Peace
As a leading voice in Africa, Nigeria must not be a bystander. We must use our diplomatic weight, moral influence, and history of mediation to join the global call for peace. Conflicts like this, far from our borders, have consequences at our doorsteps—in the price of fuel, in global insecurity, and in humanitarian crises that know no boundaries.
We in Nigeria know the price of conflict. We also know the value of dialogue, forgiveness, and rebuilding. Let us lend our voice to the path of peace.
🕊️ A Final Word
The path ahead is dangerous, but not irreversible. War is not inevitable. Peace, though fragile, is always an option—if we are brave enough to pursue it.
Let this be a moment where the world chooses wisdom over vengeance. Let us resist the temptation of power, and instead pursue the promise of peace—for our children, for the voiceless, and for generations yet unborn.
